Process Utilities - Syntactical Interventions and Process Competency

“Process Utilities” is the name which I chose for some patterns I developed that enable the professional communicator to utilize the nonverbal behaviour of his vis-à-vis for the desired change immediately and broadly - especially the ideomotorics and the unconsciously chosen metaphors. They are usefull additives (utilities) in order to help, in case of stagnating processes of problem solving, understanding or integrations, the client organizing new ressources.

Process Utilities maintain resp. restore the ‘content sovereignty’ of the client. They stand within the NLP tradition of ‘syntactical interventions’ which make it easy for the coach or therapist to overcome the temptation of contaminating the inner work of his client with his own semantic productions.

Both Process Utilities presented in the two workshops are applicable also in nontherapeutic contexts in order to enhance the ressource state of the communication partner. With some practice they can be used in such a casual way that they are not noticable by third parties, for instance in a meeting situation.

Process Utilities I - Utilization of the Client´s Metaphors  (C3)

The intervention pattern “Sense Coaching” provides an impetus for a client´s stagnating thinking processes by the means of ‘sophisticated misunderstandings’: The professional translates the key metaphors which the client is using unconsciously in a very sensory specific way when talking about his problem. He does this – overtly or covertly – by using metaphorical statements and utterances based exactly on those sensory systems which the client previously excluded in his problem solving process. In order to do this elegantly he uses special criteria for the translations and by this a special form of pacing which has not been described in NLP before.

The Sense Coaching pattern is based on the notion that when a problem solving process becomes "stuck" it correlates with a severely reduced variety of the ways the sensory systems are use in generating ressources. In order to "unstick" the process the number of sensory systems involved and the fluidity of shifts between them has to be increased.

Process Utilities II - Utilization of the Client´s Ideomotorics (D2)

The Process Utilites “ReSync”-Approach and “S.I.R.”(“Shit into-Roses”)-Techniques provide a professional communicator who became unflexible due to some textual-semantical fixations with the chance to unsnare his content enmeshments and to (re)gain a high degree of ‘semantical abstinence’. They are syntactical or syntactizising interventions because they provide concrete help to fulfil the ethical demand “Keep out of the content” - they give specific instructions to the coach/therapist in terms of what to focus his attention on and what exactly to do in oder to be successful with that.

The “ReSync”-Approach is alway the best means when the interaction became redundant to a high degree, i.e. when the professional communicator already knows what his vis-á-vis will say next (and, more worse, what he himself will say next). The “ReSync”-Approach and the “S.I.R.”(“Shit into-Roses”)-Techniques create the possiblility to “restore” the rapport and to add ressources on both sides of the interaction - a (re-)synchronisation of both conscious und unconscious processes can take place.
